Saying NO to GPS
STILLWATER LAKE TO CARP LAKE, COLORADO:

34 to 40 to I70 past Breckenridge, Vail, Beaver Creek, Copper Mountain. Hung a left at Glenwood Springs in search of the Avalanche Creek Campground for lunch but it was lost and we never found it. Kept going off the beaten path through Marble, Redstone, Hotchkiss, Orchard City, Cedaredge to Grand Mesa National Forest where there are lots of bugs.

Camping was $8 with a senior NPS pass (go GB) and $16 if you are young and poor.

The fish were thick -- no gear. (more…)

LITTLE CHILDREN
BOULDER COLORADO: After much fuss, planning and speculation, the Sindwinder team has just doubled in size with the delivery and pick up of these two fine literary children to and from the Denver International Airport.

The older one has a driver's license. They both have debit cards.

They will stay on the tour till Seattle.

They will not spend all their money in Boulder since we are leaving today after a wonderful night with Jodie Hoke and Carol Keeley and they new friends last night at the Boulder Bookstore.

We are looking at Maps.

We are reading for the Rockies. Next stops:

June 30, BOOKS INC, Mountain View, CA. with Robert Thomas.
July 1, BOOK PASSAGE, San Francisco, CA (Ferry Building Store), 6 pm.
July 3, 2015 COPPERFIELDS, Healdsburg, CA, 7 pm.

Sidewinder Tour Blog Post #12.3: 10 THINGS TO DO IN BOULDER WITH A COSMONAUT

June 25, 2015

COSMONAUT
1. Take close up shots of the Cosmonaut.

2. Eat sweet potato and pineapple pancakes with the Cosmonaut.

3. Walk around lakes and pet dogs, wonder if your dog will remember you or accept the Cosmonaut.

4. Discuss Cajun food with sales clerk in shoe store who does not ask about the Cosmonaut.

5. Answer questions about the Cosmonaut asked by eager strangers at Tea Rooms with 103 teas on the menu.

7. Drink water to fend of elevation sickness since Boulder is at 5363 feet, which is nothing for Cosmonauts.

8. Discuss the gender of the Cosmonaut with trusted companions, and how the gender of the Cosmonaut was discovered with same.

9. Tour the area, assess recent flood damage, waves at friendly people in cottages, pass shops called "The Fit Shall Inherit" which will include any Cosmonaut.

10. Cruise up to the Continental Divide with the Cosmonaut.

10. Get out of the big city, go Louisville in the rain for brussel sprout salad and meet with small children interested in jet packs, Darth Vader and Cosmonauts.

10. 10. Pick up teenage relatives at the airport who are happy to accept with the Cosmonaut and the illegal AirB&B we're camped out in.

See the Cosmonaut in person at the BOULDER BOOK STORE tonight, June 25 @ 7:30.

GLORIA, aka, GB, aka, GLO, aka CO-PILOT across America and Back
Welcome aboard to my newest travel partner, Gloria Barragan, as she prepares for the Sidewind Across America Tour -- shopping in a local camping section. She claims she had never slept in a tent.

She pretty much blew the minds of the Barnes and Nobel staff in El Paso.

"How did you do the publicity?" they asked after the standing-room only crowd on Wedneday night.

"They're my friends," GB said. "I've got lots of them."

The B & N sold out and had to reorder!

GO GLO! SO HAPPY TO HAVE MY FRIEND WITH ME ON THE SIDEWIND.

GB has been to Alaska with me before. She will do it again now after we pick up my nephew Marshall and niece Carlyn in Denver. We will hang in Denver / Boulder with Carol Keeley, Jodi Hoke, and hopefully catch a glimpse of BK Loren.

Then this dream team will cross the Rockies heading straight for the Pacific.

Departing El Paso Monday for points north: Boulder, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Anchorage and on...

Next stop Boulder Colorado on June 23 at the Innisfree Poetry Bookstore & Cafe @ 6 and then on June 25 at the Boulder Book Store at 7.30. (more…)

AMERICAN HISTORY
Parking was $15 so we circled for a $5 lot.

The stone walls were thick, admission was free, the giftshop was made in China with a diorama in the middle of tiny men climbing up tiny wooden ladders up the tiny slits at the top of the walls. A few trees. Enemy encampments at the edges, who is the enemy? One man was shot in the minute ear, barrels, wagons, tents by the creek running down the center of the grounds (can't have a fort without a creek), firewood stacked for the 12 day siege, tiny horses rearing, tiny cattle penned, tiny dogs. The men fought hand-to-hand, the uniforms and weapons were painted with care. "See this cannon? Come take it!" Santa Anna did. (more…)

DOWNTOWN BUDA (daytime)
BUDA, TEXAS: I 35 south of Austin to exit 220 past the giant Cabella's to the train tracks. Wait for the freight train, wait in the signals bells -- Buda people are used to them and the whistle. Wait, though the blinking red separates you from a mattress. It is Buda tinted red at 2 am, Buda delirious after BookPeople, then a "tone" chat across the table between bottles of beer, between musicians on one side and and writers on the other, amid warm night city-breezes, then cherries with Kirk and Donna somewhere on a dark Austin hillside -- more about (more…)
